Between Tibet and India, a grand river runs through the Himalayas. This river, the namesake of the entire region, hosts some of India’s most marvelous sights at 3650 meters. We are talking, of course, about Spiti, part of the Lahaul and Spiti region, a must visit winter destination in India!
About:
The Lahaul and Spiti district is part of Himachal Pradesh, with Spiti being an area that divides India on one side and Tibet on the other. The name itself means “to split.” This mountain range is located at 12,500ft, almost at similar altitudes as Ladakh, but is more remote. Populations are sparse here, but there are documented artifacts of human inhabitation over 3000 years ago. Spiti is primarily a Buddhist district, and a biker’s paradise. The meandering roads (which can be closed for several months during winter) offer some of the best biking routes in India during summers.
Highlights:
Despite being at a high altitude, Spiti boasts of a plethora of wildlife too. The Spiti village of Khibber is known to be one of the best spots in India to try and spot the snow leopard, an apex predator in the region and a flagship species of the Himalayas. Spiti is also host to Pin Valley National Park, where numerous medicinal plants have been discovered over the years. You can also try and spot other megafauna such as the Himalayan Black Bear, Tibetan Ibex, Tibetan Fox and others.
Spiti is home to many of the same Himalayan species of birds that inhabit Ladakh and other regions, so you can plan your next birdwatching trip to Spiti as well in the summer months.
One of the biggest attractions at Spiti is the Key Monastery, built in the 17th century by Drom Tompa, a significant Tibetan Buddhist leader and teacher.
Why We Like Spiti:
- Its impeccable roads during the summer months mean that Spiti is a must visit via motorways, to give you the full Himachal experience.
