Mountain tops above the clouds, are freckled with green patches that overlook fascinating valleys, Spiti is a haven among the windswept landscapes of Northern India. The name “Spiti” means “The Middle Land”, i.e. the land between Tibet and India. Located high in the Himalayan mountains in the northeastern part of Himachal Pradesh, religion plays a major role in the everyday life of Spiti. Most famous for their natural beauty and cultural heritage, the renowned monasteries with their spectacular murals, ancient temples and several stupas, bring peace to the visitors all year round. Renowned as ‘Little Tibet’ amongst some, and popular as the ‘cold desert mountain valley’ amongst others, Spiti is undoubtedly a paradise on earth.
Why we love Spiti Valley?
Snow Leopards, Red Foxes, Golden Eagles, Himalayan Griffons, Seabuckthorns and many other interesting flora and fauna. Spiti’s valleys and mountains hold mysteries that are mesmerising to witness and a dream to experience.
Animals
Upper reaches of the Spiti Mountains are home to the most elusive big cat in the world, the snow leopard. Apart from the regal animal, other majestic creatures like the Siberian Ibex, Himalayan Wolf and Red Fox are a treat to behold in their own elements.
Birds
Witness avian wonders that wrap the space between the sky and the mountains with their wings wide spread. From one of the largest hunting birds - the Golden Eagle to the red shaded Rosefinches that chirp from the tree tops, you will encounter some unique birds on these valleys.
Plants
Spiti boasts more than 450 species of medicinal & aromatic plants and is also home to a variety of small bushes and grasses. Despite being a cold dessert, Spiti’s flora is welcomed with open arms by the locals.
The Snow Leopard
Identifiable by their thick fur and long, fluffy tail, snow leopards live in solitude in caves and dens for the majority of the year. Lucky for us, this endangered feline can be spotted in the Kibber National Park during winter months, when they come out of their habitats for the warmth of the sunlight. Locally known as Shan, it is one of the rarest large cat species found anywhere in the world.
This large cat species is primarily found in the high mountain ranges of Central and South Asia and is an endangered species that are often referred to as the “ghost of the mountains.” Because of their incredible natural camouflage, rendering them almost invisible in their surroundings, to encounter these white-grey coats spotted felines is one for the memory books.
