overview

The Sundarbans Tiger Reserve is located in the Sundarbans forest area in the Indian state of West Bengal and across the border in Bangladesh. It is one of the largest reserves for the Bengal tiger, as well as one of the most important tiger habitats in the world. The Sundarbans is a unique ecosystem consisting of mangrove forests, tidal rivers, and mudflats, forming a critical transition zone between land and sea.
The Bengal tigers in the Sundarbans have adapted to this saline environment, making them excellent swimmers and adept at hunting in the water. These tigers are known for their unique behavior of swimming through the estuaries and mangrove channels to catch prey such as deer, wild boar, and even fish.

Apart from tigers, the Sundarbans is also home to a variety of other wildlife, including saltwater crocodiles, spotted deer, wild boars, and numerous bird species. The unique ecosystem of the Sundarbans has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting the importance of its conservation.

Visitors to the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve can embark on boat safaris to explore the mangrove forests and have a chance to spot the elusive Bengal tiger in its natural habitat. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect the tigers and the fragile ecosystem of the Sundarbans from various threats, including habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict.

Apart from tracking the big cat, we will also be on the lookout for other birds and mammals. Throughout the day we will cruise through several creeks, rivers and rivulets.
If required, we will visit the watch towers like Sudhanyakhali which is good for bird watching, Red-tailed bamboo pit viper and Leopard Cat sightings. The Tiger often visits the sweet water pond which offers an amazing experience of watching a swamp tiger from a close distance and if luck favors, one can observe other interesting behavioral aspects of the cat like spray marking etc.)
