overview
Kaziranga National Park
In the heart of Assam, Kaziranga National Park is one of the last areas in eastern India
undisturbed by a human presence. One of the most sought-after wildlife holiday destinations
in India, Kaziranga National park’s 430 square kilometer area sprinkled with elephant-grass
meadows, swampy lagoons, and dense forests is home to more than 2600 Indian one-horned
rhinoceros, approximately 2/3rd of their total world population. Apart from rhinos, it is home
to many mammal species, including tigers, elephants, Asiatic wild buffalo, leopard, bears,
swamp deer, hog deer, hoolock gibbons, smooth coated otters and a high diversity of birds.
Because of its high biodiversity, Kaziranga is a UNESCO World Heritage site and it is also
declared as a Tiger Reserve in 2006. Kaziranga is recognized as an Important Bird Area
by Birdlife International for conservation of avifaunal species. With so many facets, Kaziranga
is a must visit for any wildlife enthusiast.
One Horned Rhinoceros
The Great one horned rhino is found in primarily in the state of Assam in India and parts of
Nepal. It is confined to the tall grasslands and forests in the foothills of the Himalayas. The
Indian Rhinoceros can run at speeds of up to 25 mph (40 km/h) for short periods of time and
is also an excellent swimmer. It has excellent senses of hearing and smell, but relatively poor
eyesight. The Indian and Nepalese governments have taken major steps toward Indian
Rhinoceros conservation with the help of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The Kaziranga
National Park in Assam, (having the highest Indian rhino density in the world).
Once widespread across the entire northern part of the Indian sub-continent, rhino
populations plummeted as they were hunted for sport or killed as agricultural pests. This
pushed the species very close to extinction and by the start of the 20th century, around 200
wild greater one-horned rhinos remained. The recovery of the greater one-horned rhino is
among the greatest conservation success stories in Asia. Thanks to strict protection and
management from Indian and Nepalese wildlife authorities, the greater one-horned rhino was
brought back from the brink. Today populations have increased to around 4000 rhinos in
north-eastern India and the Terai grasslands of Nepal.
