At the heart of South America, a little-ventured vista awaits. A land teeming with some of the world’s most enigmatic wildlife, and some waiting to be discovered. A biodiversity hotspot that spans across 3 entire countries. Come, discover the world’s largest wetland ecosystem, Pristine Pantanal!
The Pantanal region is a large inland wetland that spreads across Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. At 81,000sq km, it makes up 3% of the entire world’s wetland habitats. Humans and wildlife have coexisted together for centuries here, although the human settlements are remote and sparse.
Highlights:
The highlight of the Pantanal is undoubtedly the wildlife. This diverse haven has the highest concentration of wildlife in South America, even more so than the rainforests of the Amazon! With over 300 species of fish, 150 species of mammals, 650 species of birds and more. You also have a great opportunity to witness life as a Pantaneiro, the local term for the cowboys that have lived in the region for generations. Stunning landscapes that can be accessed by road only during dry seasons mean that you get to experience the Pantanal via air or via waterways, giving you even more opportunities to spot wildlife where few others can.
Wildlife in the Pantanal:
The flagship species of the Pantanal, of course, has to be the Jaguar. South America’s largest big cats have a special place in this area. There are estimated to be 1600 individuals, giving you a good chance to spot one in the wild. These jaguars are also known to be fishermen, unlike jaguars elsewhere in South America: Their main food being fish and the caiman, a species of crocodile! A river cruise in Pantanal would be an ideal experience to observe these jaguars in their element.
The Pantanal also hosts the Hyacinth Macaw, the world’s largest species of parrot at a stunning 1 metre height and almost similar wingspan. These beautiful deep blue birds should be at the top of your list if you’re a birdwatcher. Of course, there are around 650 such reasons for you to visit Pantanal!
If you’re an aquatic enthusiast, the region’s network of rivers is home to one of the most popular fishes in existence: The piranha! 3 species of these killing machines can be found and even fished for on a boating trip or fishing trip in Pantanal. Don’t forget to try and spot capybaras as well while touring the same river network. These large, amusing animals are the world’s largest rodents, and are also a key prey for the jaguars and sometimes even piranhas.
