Borneo, the land of a million living beings, is home to one of the world’s oldest rainforests and coral reefs. If you seek the rare and the resplendent, Borneo is where you’ll find it. Whether land or sea or both, make sure you experience Borneo’s magic on your next vacation!
About Borneo:
Borneo is an island region, and in fact is the world’s third largest island, with parts of it overlapping with other countries: Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. Much of Borneo lies in Indonesia, but the culture of the land is an amalgamation of all 3 regions and then some.
The region’s landscape comprises vast rainforests, immense cave networks and coasts with coral reefs and shallow waters, all waiting for you to explore. In fact, Borneo also has one of the longest underground rivers in the world, the Clearwater Cave.
Borneo is home to over 200 indigenous groups of people that have lived on the island for centuries, and over 74 languages are spoken here! Dayak is the blanket term for any local who lives in Borneo, and you will get to interact with the locals and experience their way of life on your next trip to Borneo.
Highlights of Borneo:
This vista’s main delight is its wildlife, period. The islands are particularly famous for the orangutan, a critically endangered Great Ape. There are fewer than 100,000 of these majestic primates left in Borneo, and you can visit any of the national parks like the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre or Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary.
Borneo Pygmy elephants, a subspecies of Asian elephants, are also residents of the Bornean rainforests. They are said to be relatively more used to humans than elephants elsewhere, which means your chances of sighting a herd or an individual are high. You can either walk through the rainforests, or take a more leisurely river safari on the Kinabatangan River and try your luck there.
Once you hit the waters, the marine life that lives around Borneo’s coral reefs will leave you spellbound. There are over 3000 species of fish alone to discover, along with enigmatic species of sea turtles such as the Olive Ridley or the Hawksbill.
Borneo’s cave systems are a good place to explore wildlife that we usually don’t associate with at the first go, such as the millions of bats and cave-dwelling swallows and swifts.
And if wildlife isn’t your priority, then a visit to Mount Kinabalu to admire Borneo’s ever changing landscape is a great option, or a canopy walk at Ulu Temburong National Park where you walk along with the mighty evergreen trees.
