Lovely Ladakh

The Himalayas have always held secrets waiting to be discovered. Some of them lie with the friendly people, some of them with the mystical land, and some of them with the most beautiful wildlife you will ever witness in a high-altitude landscape. Ladakh is one such region where you can witness some of these secrets for yourself, and become emboldened to explore the rest of the great Himalayas!

About

One of India’s most beautiful union territories, Ladakh is a winter paradise full of vast mountain ranges and valleys with pretty rivers cutting through them. Historically, Ladakh was an essential trade route for the Chinese, and was soon developed as an amazing tourist destination that is accessible for most of the year except the harshest of winter days.

Ladakh’s secrets can be traced back to the Neolithic era, with historians finding rock carvings in several places. This is also one of India’s highest districts at an elevation of 3000 meters. Being at that altitude, coupled with the seemingly sparse vegetation makes Ladakh one of the world’s major cold deserts.

Highlights:

Ladakh is home to over 300 species of birds, including both migratory and resident species. You would be surprised thinking that a landscape like Ladakh can host such a diversity of species, but high altitude birds have always thrived here! Enigmatic species such as the Snow Partridge, Himalayan Monal, Griffon Vulture, Black Necked Crane are all birds you must see on your next trip to Ladakh.

But don’t think this region is devoid of megafauna. The snow leopard stealthily roams the cragged hilltops, searching for Ibexes or blue sheep to hunt. Ladakh is also home to the Urial, an extremely rare species of wild sheep. Tibetan foxes are a more common sight, with their coat turning a beautiful orange in the summer and a stark white in the winter to change with the landscape.

Ladakh is a cultural hotspot as well. The Ladakhi people have inhabited Ladakh for centuries now, and still continue to follow traditional ways of life despite modern comforts. Most people are pastoralists, tending to their yaks. Visit Ladakh during the festive seasons to witness magnificent events such as the Harvest Festival in September or the Losar festival during the Tibetan new year.
