Red Elephants of Tsavo

The soil is rich in iron oxide, which gives it a reddish hue. The elephants use the soil to protect themselves from the sun, insects and parasites.

How Did they become Red?

They have larger ears than other elephants, which helps them regulate their body temperature by fanning themselves with cool air. Larger ears also enhance their hearing ability, which is crucial for detecting threats and communicating with their herd.

How did they adapt to their habitat?

They are keystone species, which means they have a large impact on their environment. They create paths and clearings that allow other animals and plants to thrive.
